Kenneth W. Schreiber February 28, 1934-September 8, 2017 Kenneth William Schreiber, 83, of La Porte passed away Friday, September 8, at the Franciscan Health Inpatient Hospice Center in Michigan City after a brief illness. Ken was born February 28, 1934, in Chicago to Kenneth and Henriette (Coester) Schreiber. He was a Michigan City Elston High School and Valparaiso University graduate and taught for 40 years at La Porte High School. Ken earned 10 varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball at Elston and played football - still ranking eighth in career rushing - and baseball at Valparaiso. While also coaching football, basketball and tennis at La Porte, Ken was most recognized for his 39 seasons as the head baseball coach. Over his coaching career, his teams posted an overall record of 1,010-217 and won seven state championships. For all of his accomplishments, Ken was named as high school baseball "Coach of the Century" by Collegiate Baseball magazine in 1998. In addition, he was enshrined into many halls of fame, including American Baseball Coaches Association, National High School Baseball Coaches Association, National Federation of High Schools, National High School Athletic Coaches Association, Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association, Norman J. Hubner La Porte Athletics, Slicer Baseball, Slicer Football Association, Valparaiso University Athletics, Elston Athletics, Michigan City Football and La Porte Old-Timers Baseball Association. Ken was one of three founders of the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association and served as the organization's president for three terms. He also was a member of the organizing committee of the National High School Baseball Coaches Association and served as president in 2001. He also served locally on the Police Merit Commission. Ken is survived by his wife, Judith nee Malloy; children Eric (Kemilyn), Kimberly (David) Small, Douglas (Sarah), Daniel, Mark (Marti) and Keith; grandchildren Kyle, Scott and Kade; and stepgrandson, Josh Douglas. He was proceeded in death by his parents; stepfather, Cecil Schreiber; and sister Sandra Jones. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends Wednesday, September 13, 2017, 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Thursday, from 9:00 am until time of the service friends may call at the St. John Lutheran Church. A life celebration will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, Thursday September 14, 2017 at 10:00 am with Rev. Ronald A. Brauer officiating. Interment will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to DeCamp's Band of Brothers through the Unity Foundation of La Porte County, P.O.
