Lora Mccoy

Lora Mae McCoy June 1, 1923-October 8, 2013 Mrs. Lora Mae McCoy, 90, of Walkerton, Indiana, passed on Tuesday October 8, 2013 at Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital. She was born June 1, 1923 in Pikeville, Kentucky, the daughter of Hassell Blackburn and Mary (Martin) Blackburn. On August 22, 1941, in Pikeville, Kentucky, she married Samuel R. McCoy who preceded her in death January 4, 2004. Anyone who knew Lora knew that she was the perfect model of southern hospitality - showing graciousness, kindness and warmth to others at all times. She always put her guests' needs and wants before her own. She was an excellent cook, probably best known for her soup beans and homemade cornbread. If one was lucky enough to know her, they knew they had a friend for life...a true friend. Lora was the definition of a selfless giver...she gave, and gave and gave, never expecting (or accepting) anything in return. There was never a person who left her home hungry. Lora and her husband, Sam, raised 8 children during the Great Depression, the Vietnam War and several other historical moments in time. Talking with Lora about the "old days" was awe-inspiring at times. This world will be minus one saint with Lora gone. She was the embodiment of strength, virtue, warmth, compassion and love. She is survived by her daughter - Billie Marie Ash of La Porte, IN; 6 sons - Michael (Andi) McCoy of La Porte, IN, George (Diane) McCoy of La Porte, IN, Randy (Vickie) McCoy of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Dannie (Kelly Shaw) McCoy of Marionville, MO, Sonny (Michelle McIntyre) McCoy of Walkerton, IN, Jerry (Diana) McCoy of Mill Creek, IN; and daughter-in-law, Judy McCoy of Walkerton, IN.; fifteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; 3 brothers - Bob Blackburn, Thomas Thacker, Dean Thacker, all of Regina, KY; 3 sisters - Lola Bailey of Michigan City, IN, Gladys Martin of Regina, KY, Ruby Rabbitt of North Lawrence, OH. Lora was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Fred McCoy, grandson, Chris McCoy, four brothers, Tommy Blackburn, Howard "Hunter" Thacker, Geriod Thacker, Ted Thacker, and sister, Hazel Coleman. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm and Friday, October 11, 2013 from 10:00 am, until time of service.
