He was born October 19, 1930 in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of Ernest Uhlemann and Lillian (Bruhnke) Uhlemann. Bob was an honor student at LaPorte high-school, sat first chair trumpet in band, ran track four years, played basketball two years and lettered three years in football. Played with conference champs, honored pick by U.P. in 47 as second team all-state fullback. Bob was inducted into the LPHS Football Hall of Fame. Attended IU on grade scholarship. At one time taught at nine schools and supervised 14 schools in athletics. First to bring Nelson Golden Glow as fund raiser to LaPorte. To help fill a need for girls sports he took a gym class activity, adopted it for competition and called it Ring Toss. One of his remedies for playground boo boos was and I quote "just rub it and it will feel better". I'm sure Bob's students reading this obituary will remember this from his classes. Even though he spent many hours with his work he still managed to spend time fishing and enjoying nature with his kids. Along with teaching he spent many summers as LaPorte Recreation Director in various areas of Park Dept. rolls. He also coached Pony League and Little L league teams. Started girls teams in softball and volleyball. In a Herald Argus retirement interview then superintendent Bob Miller, he referred to Bob as "Kid Oriented". Quote from Bob was "I have more fun then the kids, it's a joy to go to work". Along with all the sports activities Bob was involved with, one of his great joys was also gardening and it was evident when you stepped into his back yard. On June 21, 1980, in LaPorte, IN, he married Yvette Tate Uhlemann who survives. He is also survived by his daughter - Diane (Lou) McCall of Medesto, CA; two sons - Carl (Nadia) Uhlemann of La Porte, IN, Dale Uhlemann of La Porte, IN; several grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
