Vivian Nye Mar. 8, 1928 - Nov. 13, 2017 Vivian Nye of La Porte, IN passed away Monday Nov. 13, 2017 at her home. She was born on March 8, 1928 to Rosa and Byron Newland. She graduated from Stillwell High School. In 1946 she married John C. (J.C.) Brettin. She went on to graduate from the La Porte Business School and worked for State Farm Insurance. Then she worked at the La Porte County Courthouse for many years. She was a 4-H Club leader, member of a home economics club and active in the Republican Party. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church for many years and more recently has been a member of the First United Methodist Church of La Porte. Many people met Vivian when she coordinated the Over 40 Dance Club for 12 years. Vivian was preceded in death by husbands J.C. Brettin, Albert Schmitz and Charles Nye and two brothers Orville Newland and Garland Newland Vivian is survived by her two daughters, Sandra (Dale) Cardwell of Shell Lake, Wisconsin. and Connie (Steve) Thate of La Porte. She has six granddaughters, Kristine (Brian) Toone of Hoover, Alabama; Alicia "Nikki" (Robert) Davis of Evansville, Indiana; Anna (Hal) De La Rosby of Tacoma, Washington ;Natalie (Robert) Sularski of Valparaiso, Indiana; Kelly (Nick)Wahlstrom of La Porte; and Kathryn Cardwell of Perth, Australia. Vivian also has eleven great grandchildren and a brother Eugene Newland. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Friday Nov. 17, 2017, from 10:30 am until time of the service. A life celebration will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc,Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, at 1:00 pm with Reverend Robert Vale and Reverend Evan Lash officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City, IN. Vivian's family thanks Pat Bierly, her dedicated care giver for several years, and Hospice Franciscan of Michigan City for their compassionate care.
