Clarence ?Bud? Luhr, 87, 910 2nd Ave. NW, Minot, ND, died Saturday, January 13, 2007, in a Minot hospital. He was born on May 17, 1919, in La Porte, IN, the son of Alois J. and Mary E. Grimberg Luhr. He was reared and educated in LaPorte and at a young age worked at an auto parts and hardware store. Bud entered the United States Navy and served on a submarine in the South Pacific during World War II. After his discharge, he met and married Esther Leona Hornbeck. Esther died on October 1, 1981, in South Bend, IN. Bud worked at various places in LaPorte. He donated his family?s farmland in La Porte to the county and with Bud?s guidance the county developed the property into Luhr Park. Bud spent his summers in La Porte and winters in Mesa, AZ. He met Joyce Gettelman in the fall of 1983, while she was on vacation in Mesa. The couple began their courtship and were married on September 22, 1984, at Zion Lutheran Church in Minot, ND. The couple spent their summers in Minot and winters in Mesa. Bud was known for his cooking, especially his delicious peach pies and homemade bread and enjoyed sharing them with others. While in Minot, Bud and Joyce enjoyed the summer theatre programs at Minot State University, Arts in The Park, the Tomato Festival numerous other cultural events and volunteering at Norsk Hostfest. Bud was a kind and generous person, a real gentleman?s gentleman. He was a proud, patriotic man who was devoted to God and his country. He was well liked and respected. Joyce wife of 22 years, his family and his friends in Minot, La Porte and Mesa areas, will miss him. He was a member of the St. Leo?s Catholic Church in Minot and Christ the King Catholic Church, Mesa, AZ. He held life memberships in the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus in Minot. Survivors: wife, Joyce, Minot. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther, parents, Alois and Mary; brother, Vincent Luhr, and his two sisters, Marie Luhr and Alice Topper. Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, January 22, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at the Haverstock Funeral Home, La Porte, IN. Visitation: Sunday, January 21, 2007, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home. Burial: Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, IN.
