Dale Roger Lake

November 16, 1944 — April 11, 2026

LaPorte

Dale Roger Lake, age 81, of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Northwest Health – LaPorte, surrounded by the care and compassion of those who served him in his final days.

Born on November 11, 1944, in LaPorte, Indiana, Dale was the beloved son of the late Harold and Carlotta Lake. A proud American and dedicated servant to his country, Dale answered the call to duty by enlisting in the United States Army, where he served honorably from 1964 to 1967. During his time in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967, Dale demonstrated exceptional bravery and commitment, earning the prestigious Bronze Star for his courageous service.

Following his military service, Dale built a strong and steady career, working for Amoco Oil for twenty years. He later continued his working life at the Westville Correctional Institution, where he served faithfully for over two decades as a foreman before his well-earned retirement. Dale was a man who believed in hard work, loyalty, and integrity—qualities that defined both his professional and personal life.

On December 21, 1991, Dale married the love of his life, Beverly Gergely. Together, they shared a deep and abiding love until her passing on March 18, 2018. Their union was one of companionship, laughter, and enduring devotion.

Affectionately known as “Mr. Sunshine” at the LaPorte Family YMCA, Dale’s warm smile and cheerful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He had a gift for brightening even the simplest of days and truly embodied his nickname. Dale loved staying active and social—whether swimming at the YMCA, gathering with friends as part of the ROMEO group (Retired Old Men Eating Out), or enjoying conversations with those he encountered along the way.

Dale found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved visiting flea markets, especially in Shipshewana, and never missed a chance to browse for treasures at Bailey’s Discount Center in Toto, Indiana. A talented cook, he enjoyed preparing meals for himself and others, always sharing generously. His interests were wide and varied; he had a deep appreciation for old cars, found peace in fishing, and expressed his creativity through painting.

A proud and active member of his community, Dale belonged to VFW Post 1130 and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 295 in Union Mills. He was also involved with the Michigan City Art League, the LaPorte Senior Center, and the Swanson Center Exercise Club. His generous spirit extended to volunteer work with the LaPorte County Museum. Above all, Dale was deeply patriotic, carrying a lifelong respect and love for his country.

Dale also held a special place in his heart for his beloved dogs, who brought him companionship and joy throughout the years.

A life so richly lived and generously shared will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Dale’s legacy is one of kindness, service, and a spirit that lifted others.
