David A. Rykhus

David Alan Rykhus, 87, of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, in the community where his life began. Born on May 28, 1938, in LaPorte, he was the son of Hans and Anna (Dolch) Rykhus, who preceded him in death.

David was a proud graduate of LaPorte High School, Class of 1956. He went on to serve his country as a member of the Indiana National Guard from 1958 to 1962,nexemplifying a quiet sense of duty and responsibility that would define his life. On September 23, 1961, David married the love of his life, Rosemary Longfellow. Their marriage was one of devotion and companionship until her passing on June 8, 2000. David carried her memory with him always.

David dedicated 34 years of service to NIPSCO, working as a Relief Operator at the Generating Station in Michigan City. Known for his reliability and depth of knowledge, his role required him to master every position in the plant—a challenging responsibility he met with diligence, humility, and pride. Outside of work, David was passionate about amateur radio. A licensed HAM Radio operator, he found joy and connection through the airwaves and was an active member of several organizations, including the Midwest Country Cousins, the LaPorte Amateur HAM Radio Club, and the Michigan City Amateur HAM Radio Club. Through these groups, he built lasting friendships and shared his love of communication and technology. David was a longtime member of First Christian Church in LaPorte, remaining faithful until the church dissolved several years ago. His life reflected steady values, kindness, and quiet generosity.

He is survived by his sons, Tim Rykhus (Cherri) and Terry Stevens (Donna); grandchildren, Chris Rykhus, Tiffany Bracy (Kevin), Rob Stevens, and Brandy Smith (Jeremiah); and great-grandchildren Izak, Broc, Alexis, Aria, Enzo, Emma, Blake, and Natalie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Rosemary; his sister, Ann Louise Jagodka; and his special friend, Anna M. Bell.

Memorial contributions may be made in David’s memory to The Independent Cat Society, 4061 S. County Line Road, Westville, Indiana 46391, or to the American Heart Association or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
