Elwyn "Al" Ames August 5, 1940- May 8, 2018 Elwyn Ames, better known to family and friends as Al, passed away on Tuesday May 8, 2018 un-expectantly at home. He was born to Thomas and Delma (Rosenbaum) Ames on August 5, 1940 in Rolling Prairie, Indiana. On September 23, 1961, he married the love of his life Ann Miller who survives along with his son, Michael (Joni) Ames and grandson Brandon Ames, sisters, Lila Hagenow of La Porte, Indiana, Deverl Ames of Peru, Indiana, and Fonda Risner of Clyde, Ohio. Along with many nieces and nephews and cousins. He was a member of the National Cutting Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, Farm Bureau, and American Farrier Association. He was a self employed farrier for over 50 years, enjoying working with horses all of his life and loving the gift of gab with friends and clients. Al was a breeder of quarter horses for over 40 years. The sires of Poco Van Star and Star Van, were known as some of the best buckskin stallions around. He enjoyed producing horses that excelled in reining, pleasure, hunt seat, and trail. He also enjoyed camping and city farming with his old John Deere tractors. He was proceeded in death by his parents, and half sister, Lilian. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Sunday Farmers Tractor Club of La Porte, 11102 W. 1350 S. Wanatah, Indiana 46390, or the National Cutting Horse Youth Scholarship, 260 Bailey Ave, Fort Worth, Texas 76107. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends Friday, May 11, 2018 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday May 12, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. till the time of service. A Life celebration will be held at Haverstock Funeral home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Norman Tyson officiating. Interment will follow at the Rolling Prairie Cemetery, Rolling Prairie, Indiana.
