James A Vardaman, 86, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday, June 6, 2025 at Medilodge in Sault Sainte Marie, MI.

He was born November 22, 1938 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Jerry J. Vardaman and Mildred (Hatfield) Vardaman.

James was a lifelong resident of the area, moving only a year ago to Michigan. He worked for Kingsley Furniture until his retirement. On February 10, 1963, in La Porte, James married Edna Lee Richardson, who preceded him in death in 2007. He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, Harold Mohler; daughter, Kay Cooper; brothers and sisters, Shirley Summerville, Bob Vardaman, Phylis Jean Mansbridge, Ross Vardaman Sr, Mary Roach, Darlene Kuta; grandson, Jimmy Cooper and 1 great- great-grandchild.

James served in the United States Air Force and worked training paratroopers. He was a member of the Nazarene Church in La Porte, and a longtime Jay Cee. James loved to fish, was an avid canasta player and enjoyed watching game shows on TV. The St Louis Cardinals were his favorite sports team and his passion was planning picnics and family gatherings. He had a zest for life and community, and he will be missed by those whose life he touched.

James is survived by his three daughters, Charlotte McLeod of Sault Sainte Marie, MI, Letha Fusko of Mt Pleasant, WI, Shirley Gunter of Dahlgren, IL; grandchildren, Frank, Donald, Thomas, Julie, Elizabeth, Gertrude, James and Charles; numerous great and great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a visitation on Monday, June 16, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until service time at noon. Interment will follow at Springville Cemetery.
