Janet R. Peterson

Janet Rae Peterson, 87, of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026, in LaPorte. She was born on November 2, 1938, in Pike County, Indiana, to Alfred and Juanita (Young) Herbst, both of whom preceded her in death.

On November 2, 1956, Janet married the love of her life, Larry L. Peterson. Their marriage, begun on her birthday, was a testament to enduring devotion and partnership. They shared more than six decades together until Larry’s passing on December 23, 2018.

Janet was a woman of quiet strength, deep faith, and gentle grace. She was a devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tracy, Indiana, where her faith guided her life and shaped her compassion for others. She served her community as a bank teller at Fifth Third Bank in LaPorte, where she was known for her kindness, integrity, and welcoming smile.

A proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Janet also had a deep appreciation for history and family heritage, spending many enjoyable hours researching genealogy. Her love of learning extended beyond books and records; she delighted in travel and was fortunate to visit many countries, including Australia, Germany, France, and England, experiences she cherished and fondly recalled.

At home, Janet found joy in simple pleasures—tending to her garden, nurturing her flowers, and settling in with a good book. Christmastime held a special place in her heart, a season she loved for its beauty, traditions, and the opportunity to gather family close.

Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Larry L. Peterson; brothers, Jack Herbst and James Herbst; sons, Larry L. Peterson, Jr. and James R. Peterson; her parents; her brothers, Jerry Herbst and Alfred Herbst, Jr.; her sister, Sharolyn Geren; and her granddaughter, Jessica Peterson.

She is survived by her brothers, (Tina); her grandchildren, Gregory Downs (Kristi), Michael Peterson, Nathan Peterson, Heather Anderson, Ron Downs, Clay Downs and Matt Downs; many great-grandchildren and many extended family members and friends who will remember her for her warmth, her quiet humor, and her steadfast love.

Funeral services for Janet will be held on Saturday, January 24, at 11 AM at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN. A visitation will be held on Friday evening, January 23 from 5-7 PM and again on Saturday morning at 10 AM until the time of service. Burial will take place at Tracy Lutheran Cemetery in Tracy, IN.

Janet’s life was one of devotion—to her family, her faith, and the values she held dear. Her memory will continue to bloom in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, much like the flowers she so carefully tended.
