Joe Shaffer, born on May 10, 1959, in La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his home in Michigan City, Indiana, on May 9, 2025. He was a well-respected machine shop supervisor for Aero Metals before going to work for Cleveland Cliffs. Known for his work ethic, Joe was regarded as a workaholic who also owned a snowplowing business, pressure washing business and Advance Archery and Sports, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit.
A passionate outdoorsman, Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating. He was an enthusiastic member of an archery league and found great joy in camping adventures. Colleagues and friends knew him as a buy-sell-trade man, often engaging in lively discussions and transactions. His culinary talents were widely celebrated; he was recognized as a great cook and earned considerable praise for his exceptional skills in smoking meats.
Joe's interests extended to off-roading and he was always involved in various projects around the house, reflecting his hands-on personality. He shared a deep bond with his dogs, Mia and Max, who brought immense joy to his life, as well as Baily, who preceded them in death.
In his personal life, Joe was a devoted family man, having spent the last 29 years with his beloved partner, Dawn Haines. He is survived by his brother, Bobby Shaffer, and many close friends who cherished his vibrant spirit and generous nature. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Ruby Shaffer, and his brothers, Ronnie and Max Shaffer.
A visitation will be held on May 16, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and again on May 17, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Haverstock Funeral Home Inc, located at 602 Maple Ave, La Porte, IN 46350. The funeral service will follow on May 17 at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Scott Jones officiating. Interment immediately after at Salem Heights Cemetery, situated at 3501 IN-4, La Porte, IN 46350.
Joe Shaffer will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his love for the great outdoors, and his charismatic presence that touched the lives of many.
