John Kenneth Becker
June 8, 1950-August 18, 2025
John Becker, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on August 18, 2025, in La Porte, Indiana — in the home he proudly built with his own two hands 20 years earlier.
Raised on a horse farm in rural Wisconsin, John’s childhood was marked by humble beginnings. School never quite captured his interest—he preferred the honest work of the farm and the joy of playing music.
After high school, John attended mechanical vocational training and went on to spend over 30 years as a heavy machinery mechanic on the railroad with Conrail. Living with a strong sense of urgency, he brought an exceptional work ethic to every job — sometimes leaving those around him wondering if he ever slowed down to take a breath.
John was known far and wide for his ability to build or fix just about anything. Confident with a unique sense of style and humor, John had a presence that always seemed to leave a lasting impression.
He built his primary home in 2005, followed by a second home he completed in 2022 — proof that his hands and mind were always busy. John preferred the outdoors, often spending hours in the garage caring for his many tractors - primarily his backhoe, welding, or bringing new projects to life. If there was a way to improve it, John would find it.
Above all, John dearly loved his grandchildren and played a meaningful role in their lives. In the years leading up to his passing, he helped care for them with steady hands and a generous heart — offering not just his time and labor, but wisdom, laughter, and unconditional love.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; daughters Mellissa Becker and Jenny (James) Hedges; and cherished grandchildren Ethan Becker, Grant Becker, Jackson Hedges, and Charles Hedges. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Becker and Geraldine Thode.
John touched many lives with his humor, tireless work ethic, inventive spirit, and unwavering dedication to family. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him—and in every project that bears the mark of his handiwork.
