John Leroy Bennitt

John Leroy Bennitt, Jr., age 74, of LaPorte, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, in the early morning hours of Thursday, April 23, 2026.

Born on June 26, 1951, in LaPorte, John was the son of the late John Leroy Bennitt, Sr. and Kayre Reidlin Gori. A proud graduate of LaPorte High School, he went on to dedicate more than 46 years of his life as a skilled millwright at Bethlehem Steel. His work ethic, strength, and unwavering determination were hallmarks of both his professional life and the way he lived each day.

In 1971, John married the love of his life, Jeanne L. Maerz. Together, they shared 55 years of devotion, building a life centered on love, family, and steadfast commitment. Their bond was a true partnership, one that endured life’s joys and challenges with grace and resilience.

John will be remembered as a caring man with a fiercely strong will and a deep passion for his beliefs and, above all, his family. He found great joy in the quiet moments at home, especially in his workshop—fondly known as “The Dog House.” There, his creativity and craftsmanship came to life. He took pride in building beautiful handmade furniture, including dressers and cedar chests, and even crafted a violin and a ukulele—each piece a reflection of his patience, talent, and love for working with his hands.

Nothing brought John more happiness than time spent with his family. He especially cherished his role as a grandfather. Whether in the stands or cheering from the sidelines, he was a constant and proud presence at his granddaughters’ softball games, celebrating their accomplishments with unmistakable pride and joy. He also had a special place in his heart for his beloved little dog, Oreo Double Stuff, who was a constant and comforting companion by his side.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanne L. (Maerz) Bennitt; his daughter, Jennifer Craft (Tim); his son, Tony Bennitt (Stacy); his brothers, Raymond Bennitt (Kim), Terry Bennitt, and Mark Favia (Diane); his sister, Leanne Hotchkiss (Keith); and his three cherished granddaughters, Janaye Bennitt, Addyson Bennitt, and Ashley Bennitt, who were truly the light of his life. He also leaves behind five lifelong friends, Chuck Conn, Bob Carpenter, and Bill Ladra, Pat Casey and Bill Pickter, who will deeply miss his companionship and loyalty.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his stepfather, the late Phillip Favia his brothers, Rick Favia and Nickolas Favia; and his sisters, Christy Bennitt, Fran Walters, and Sarah Banghart.

The memorial service for John L. Bennitt, Jr. will be held on Saturday, May 2, at 3:00 PM at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 PM until the time of service. Burial will be private.

John’s legacy is one of strength, craftsmanship, devotion, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
