Judith Susan Rein, 78, of La Porte, passed away unexpectedly at 1:55 p.m., Sunday August 24, 2025 at her home.
She was born on January 16, 1947, in Chicago to Bernard and Leanore (Cohn) Rein.
“Judy our beloved sister was the keeper of an honest heart. She was a good person in every meaning of the word. Judy walked a straight path, not wavering left or right. Her moral compass was fixed and she stuck to her guns. When in doubt, shortcuts were not in her sights.
Judy was a carer for mom for over 2 years. She gave of herself instead of thinking of herself. Her talents and innate abilities in art and sport were exceptional, and her intelligence was beyond the norm. Judy was a constant in Karin’s and my life, with a Sunday phone call for who knows how many years. Sending care packages that brought such happiness and appreciation to all the Israeli Rein’s. As life took a turn for her, she met the change with an acceptance and tenacity that few would have had. There was no end to her stubbornness and she fought for her independence right to the end.
Her loss is real and something that will be brought to mind every Sunday night. Judy was the glue between the three of us. Hopefully she has now found some peace, because she certainly deserves it. So many facets to a diamond of your caliber. To mention a “few”; your never-ending love and loyalty to the Cubs, your fierce love towards Joe, David, Janet, Yona, Guy, Lee, and your lifelong friends.
Everyone was aware of your fiery tongue and quick wit!. You also loved to play ma-jong against the computer, you were the queen of trivia, crosswords and puzzles, an avid reader and an ace on classical music, a piano player, a writer and reader of Japanese, and an archeologist and anthropologist. Lets not forget you loved to cook your “classic” dishes, but hated house chores, your love of dogs, remembering every birthday and making beautiful cards for everyone, the wonderful care packages you sent us, you taking care of Joe’s affairs, your love of bagels and potato latkes, and other food stuffs too.
You loved telling Rein family stories with great accuracy; not like Joe and David, you always set the record straight. Your sports trophies proved to all of us you excelled at basketball and baseball. You loved the changing of the seasons, believing that there may even be a God, while observing the fall colors changing the landscape. You lived by a different clock, night was your day and day was your night.
My final words to you, my dear, dear, dear Judy, your art. Your paintings adorn every wall in our house. Your beautiful technique and use of water colors is admired by all across our threshold. It will be hard not to photograph all the “Judy pictures” we see while on holiday. I think the biggest void will be left on Sunday at 8pm when the phone wont ring for the weekly roundup news bulletin. Every call ended with a mutual “I Love you!”
Rest in peace Judy, loyal, honest and stalwart soul! You will be sorely missed!”
Surviving is her brother David Rein.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
