Michigan City

Kenneth Lee “Kenny” Potempa, age 69, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2026, at the University of Chicago Hospital, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, countless friendships, and a legacy of kindness, generosity, and love.

Kenny was born on August 26, 1957, in Michigan City, Indiana, to the late John R. and Phyllis H. (Hanish) Potempa. A proud 1975 graduate of Elston High School, Kenny spent much of his life in the community he called home. A skilled and hardworking craftsman, he was a self-employed carpenter for many years throughout the Michigan City area. His talents were reflected not only in the work of his hands but also in the pride he took in a job well done.

On July 30, 2010, Kenny married the love of his life, Julia (Blank) Potempa, after having shared their lives together since 1999. Their relationship was built upon years of companionship, friendship, laughter, and a deep and abiding love. Together, they created a beautiful life filled with treasured memories, wonderful friendships, and shared adventures. Kenny and Julia shared a love of traveling, always looking forward to discovering new places, experiencing new things, and making memories along the way. Whether exploring a new destination or returning to a favorite place, what mattered most was the time they spent together. They especially enjoyed spending their winters at their home in Delray Beach, Florida, where they embraced the sunshine, warmer weather, and the opportunity to enjoy life together.

To know Kenny was to have a friend. He possessed that rare and wonderful gift of making everyone feel welcome, valued, and included. A loving, kindhearted, and fiercely loyal man, Kenny truly never met a stranger. Whether he had known someone for five minutes or fifty years, he had a way of making them feel as though they had been friends forever. His friendships were not simply acquaintances but lifelong bonds, and many of those closest to him became an extension of his family. He was the kind of man who showed up for the people he loved, celebrated their successes, shared in their struggles, and made the ordinary moments of life a little more memorable simply by being there.

Kenny had a tremendous love for sports, friendly competition, and the camaraderie that came along with both. He could often be found enjoying a round of golf, shooting pool, or playing darts with his many friends. A devoted fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs, Kenny remained loyal to his favorite teams through the victories, defeats, and everything in between. He was also an enthusiastic collector of sports memorabilia and old signs from local restaurants, preserving little pieces of history and nostalgia that held special meaning to him. A member of the St. Joe Club, Kenny especially treasured the friendships and good times shared there.

Perhaps one of the most meaningful reflections of Kenny's generous spirit was his love of bringing people together for a good cause. He took great pleasure in organizing golf outings and dart tournaments to benefit charitable organizations, including the Alzheimer's Association and Meals on Wheels. For Kenny, these gatherings were about far more than competition. They were opportunities to create memories, strengthen friendships, share laughter, and make a positive difference in the lives of others. His willingness to give his time and energy to helping those in need spoke volumes about the kind of man he was.

Music was another great passion in Kenny's life. A true music connoisseur with wonderfully diverse tastes, he appreciated everything from the legendary sounds of Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, and Grand Funk Railroad to the country favorites of Kenny Chesney and the Charlie Daniels Band, as well as the music of the Alan Parsons Project and Jesse Welles. His musical interests knew few boundaries, and he found joy in the songs, artists, and melodies that became part of the soundtrack of his life. Much like Kenny himself, his love of music was colorful, spirited, and full of personality.

Among Kenny's many interesting life experiences was his opportunity to appear in two movies filmed in his hometown of Michigan City. He played the role of a bouncer in Best for Last and appeared as a bar patron in Bull. These unique experiences became another memorable chapter in Kenny's colorful life and added to the many wonderful stories he had to share. Whether on the big screen or simply enjoying an evening with friends, Kenny had a personality that was impossible to forget.

Kenny was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Michigan City. His life was a beautiful example of the importance of family, friendship, loyalty, and generosity. He understood that life's greatest treasures were not measured in possessions or accomplishments, but in the people who walked beside us, the laughter we shared, and the memories we created along the way.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Julia Potempa; daughter, Erica McClean; son, Jeremy McClean; brothers, Jerome Potempa (Ann), Richard Potempa (Arlene), and Deonne Madamba; his many cherished grandchildren; a host of beloved nieces and nephews; and a remarkable circle of friends who, over the years, became family in every sense of the word.

A Celebration of Kenny's Life will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2026, from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, LaPorte, Indiana. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, celebrate cherished memories, and honor a man who meant so much to so many. A special time of memory sharing will begin at 3:00 p.m., allowing those who knew and loved Kenny to reflect upon the many ways he touched their lives. This portion of the celebration will be livestreamed and may be viewed through Kenny's online tribute page.

In true Kenny fashion, the celebration of his life and the friendships he treasured will continue with a St. Valentine's Day Massacre Party held in his honor on Saturday, February 13, 2027, at the St. Joe Club, 2001 Franklin Street, Michigan City, Indiana 46360. Family and friends are invited to come together once again to share laughter, stories, and memories while celebrating a man who knew how to bring people together and make every gathering unforgettable. It will be a fitting tribute to Kenny's fun-loving spirit, his gift for friendship, and his belief that life's best moments are those shared with the people we love.

Kenny's passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Yet his spirit will live on in every story told around a table, every friendly game of darts or pool, every golf outing shared among friends, and every familiar song that brings a smile and a treasured memory. He will be remembered for his welcoming smile, his generous heart, his unwavering loyalty, and his remarkable ability to turn strangers into friends and friends into family. While his time here has come to an end, the friendships he nurtured, the love he gave, and the joy he brought into the lives of so many will remain a lasting and beautiful testament to a life well lived.
