Leatha Ann Shaffer, 81, of Argos, Indiana, passed away Monday, July 28, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
She was born July 23, 1944 in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Olin and Sarah (Harris) Bush.
Leatha grew up in La Porte and attended La Porte High School. On May 27, 1961 she married her first husband, William C. Griffin Jr, who died February 25, 1998. They moved to Kingsford Heights and raised their children. On July 20, 2002, in Hamlet, IN, Leatha married William H. Shaffer Jr, who passed away February 19, 2016. For years, Leatha attended the Church of Christ, where her brother preached, but for the last 5 years attended Antioch Baptist in Walkerton, IN, with her daughter. Leatha worked for Polygon as a machine operator until her retirement. She was also a homemaker who loved sewing and crafting, attending many festivals and craft shows. She collected all kinds of knick-knacks, enjoyed sharing stories about the "good old days", and solving her favorite word puzzles. Leatha hosted all of the family and holiday gatherings, cooking for everyone and sharing her famous Rice Krispy bars. She was the well-loved matron of the family and will be sadly missed by all.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Lee) Howard of Argos, IN; son, Kenneth Griffin of Niles, MI; brother, Carl (Joyce) Bush of La Porte, IN; sister, Erica Bush of MO; three grandchildren, Justin (Courtney Craft) Griffin, Jenny Beghtel, Dale (Geney) Beghtel Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Laken Griffin, Kayden Griffin, Justin "JJ" Griffin, Jr.; several nieces and nephews, including nephew, Wayne (Libby) Bush, who was like a brother to her.
Along with her husbands, Leatha was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kathy Beghtel, grandchild, Jerry Beghtel, grandchild, Michael Bullington, and 7 brothers and sisters.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a viewing on Monday, August 4, 2025 from 12:00 noon until service time at 1:00 p.m., with Reverend John Haferkamp, officiating. Interment will follow at the Walkerton Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton, Indiana.
