Mrs. Margery Jean Jones Gilchrist, 72, of Rolling Prairie, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in LaPorte. She was born Feb. 15, 1932, in Rolling Prairie to Richard M. Jones Sr. and Esther I. Elkins Jones Carpenter. She was raised by her grandparents, Bill and Lottie Elkins, and had lived in Rolling Prairie all her life. Mrs. Gilchrist retired after 16 years at American Home Foods, La-Porte, and then worked at LeMans Academy, Rolling Prairie, for three years. She had been a babysitter for many years. She was a member of Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school, and of La-Porte Farm Bureau and United Steel Workers. She was a Cub Scout den leader for eight years and was involved with Rolling Prairie PTA and Music Parents. On Nov. 8, 1948, in Newport, Ky., she married Gilbert J. Gilchrist Sr., who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Anne Cherie of LaPorte; three sons, Gilbert Joseph Jr. and Dale Lynn Sr., both of Rolling Prairie, and Cliffton Charles of LaPorte; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one half-sister, Sharon Worton of Pentwater, Mich.; and two halfbrothers, James E. Mitschelen of Sawyer, Mich., and Phillip C. Carpenter of LaPorte. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Roger Dean; one half-brother, Richard M. Jones Jr.; and her grandparents. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Rev. David Tripp officiating. Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Rolling Prairie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 7363 E. 21 st. St., Indianapolis, IN 46219.
