Mary Margaret “Peggy” Willett, of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, at the age of 71.
Born on May 19, 1954, in LaPorte to the late John Leffert and Mary Cecilia (Knight) Leffert, Peggy was a proud graduate of LaCrosse High School, Class of 1972. She carried with her throughout life the values of hard work, resilience, and kindness that defined her character.
On October 11, 1985, in LaPorte, Peggy married the love of her life, Lewis Stephen “Steve” Willett. Together, they built a life rooted in devotion, partnership, and shared adventure. Their bond was evident in all they did, especially in their later years when they owned and operated their beloved food trailer, The Beef Chief, traveling throughout the Midwest and serving up great food and warm smiles at festivals far and wide.
Peggy was a woman of many talents and passions. A graduate of the floral design program at Purdue University, she found joy and artistry in her work as a floral designer, creating beauty that touched countless lives. She also worked as a catering manager, where her natural gift for hospitality shone brightly. Known as a wonderful cook, Peggy expressed her love through the meals she prepared, bringing family and friends together around the table.
At home, Peggy’s gentle spirit was evident in the life she cultivated. She was an avid gardener with a true green thumb, nurturing vibrant gardens and her house plants which reflected her care and patience. Her love for animals was equally profound—she raised Dobermans and Dachshunds, caring for them with the same tenderness she extended to everyone around her.
Peggy’s family remembers her as a loving soul with a gentle heart, a hard worker, and a true fighter who faced life’s challenges with quiet strength and grace. She remained a trooper until the very end, leaving behind a legacy of perseverance, warmth, and unwavering love.
She is survived by her devoted husband of over 40 years, Steve Willett; her son, Craig Willett (Kerstin); her brothers, Paul Leffert and Steve Leffert; and four cherished grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three siblings, and her infant son, Cory Davis.
