Michael Andrew Ryan, 72, of Union Mills, passed away peacefully at 2:01 a.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Born in La Porte on August 22, 1953, Michael was the son of Earl and Violet (Madura) Ryan. On May 26, 1973, he married Patricia Kennedy in Fish Lake. She survives.
Michael was a devoted family man who cherished time with his children and grandchildren, especially attending their sporting events. A lifelong Cubs fan, he also enjoyed coaching Little League softball and Baseball. He found joy in the outdoors—playing golf, gardening, and watching game shows. His large vegetable garden was a source of pride, and he generously shared its bounty with friends and family.
An animal lover, Michael had many pets over the years. His beloved dogs Bandit and Snickers, and cats Peanut and Callie, will miss him dearly. He was also an avid fan of crime dramas, especially NCIS and CSI, and was known for his great sense of humor.
A lifelong resident of Union Mills, Michael graduated from South Central High School in 1971. His legacy continues through his children and seven grandchildren, all of whom have either graduated from or are currently attending South Central. He was a well-known and respected member of the community, leaving behind many friends and loved ones. Above all, Michael was a loving husband, father, and “Papa” who will be deeply missed.
He is survived by:
• His wife, Patricia Ryan • His daughter, Jennifer (Martin) Jimenez, and their children Jacqueline and Molly
• His son, Michael (Casey) Ryan, and their children Chloe, Baylee, and Lincoln
• His son, Mark (Becky) Ryan, and their children Nolan and Owen
• His brother, Elwyn Ryan, and sister-in-law, Theresa Ryan and his nephews Tim, Todd, and Troy
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave, La Porte, with Pastor Nate Loucks officiating. Visitation will take place on Thursday, September 18, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., and again on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Union Mills Cemetery.
A celebration of life luncheon will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Union Mills Conservation Club and all are welcome to come.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Central Athletic Program. Michael was passionate about supporting his grandchildren, and contributions will help provide continued athletic opportunities for South Central students. Two of his grandchildren, Lincoln (12th grade) and Molly (9th grade), are currently athletes at South Central.
