Patricia D. Meikle, age 87, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday morning, June 15, 2026.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 11, 1939, Patricia was the daughter of the late Edward Stepanek and Mae (Kebr) Stepanek. Her earliest childhood friend was Nancy (Mae Koski Kwaiatkowski). They would open their childhood adjacent kitchen windows from early morning until the wee hours of the night and share their thoughts. They continued this sweet friendship until Nancy passed in 2012.
Patricia graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1957 and went on to earn her degree from Chicago Teachers College. Patricia devoted more than twenty years of her life to educating young minds with the Chicago Public School System, a profession that reflected her lifelong love of learning and sharing knowledge with others.
In 1971, Patricia married the love of her life, William G. Meikle, a WWII veteran, in Saugany Lake. Together they built a life centered on family, devotion and shared dreams. William preceded her in death, but their love remained a guiding force throughout her life.
Patricia’s connection to Saugany Lake and Rolling Prairie began at a young age. At just eighteen years old, she and her mother built the beginning of the home which would become a cherished gathering place for family, friends, and students alike. In 1983, she became a full-time resident of the community she loved so dearly.
For the remainder of her life Patricia enriched the lives of countless children and adults throughout the area by teaching private piano lessons in her home. Through her patience, encouragement, and passion for music, she inspired generations of students and left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of learning from her. If you ever hear Malaguena from Andalucia (suite Espagnole) by Ernesto Lecuona, know that was her go-to piece to play at home after dinner and she didn’t say any bad words when she messed up. Not an easy feat.
Patricia found joy in the beauty of the world around her. She loved gardening and took great pride in the flowers that bloomed throughout her yard. She wasn’t a fan of weeding but she did it anyway, and wasn’t afraid to put it on her honey-do list for others. Her creative spirit shone through her stained-glass artistry, and her compassionate heart was evident in the many dogs she rescued and cared for over the years.
Above all else, Patricia treasured her family. She was an extraordinary mother. Her son Guy was her absolute proudest accomplishment and she was affectionately known as “the best mother-in-law.” Her strength of character, endless curiosity, creativity, and unwavering determination were qualities admired by all who knew her.
In her last years, she and her cousin Helen (M. Hickey Kendrya) had a standing date to speak over the phone every night, and they would enjoy visits, playing cards with her at home with Karen, Mike, and anyone else who wanted to lose their money.
Patricia is survived by her son, Guy William Meikle, daughter-in-law, Tiffany Johnson Meikle; her faithful canine companion, Duffy; and many extended family members and dear friends who will cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, William G. Meikle, many relatives and close friends.
Patricia’s life was a beautiful testament to the power of education, music, creativity, and love. Through the lessons she taught, the gardens she nurtured, the animals she rescued, and the family she cherished, she leaves behind a legacy of kindness, inspiration, and grace that will continue to bloom in the hearts of all who knew her. Her last moments were watching the final episode of the Colbert Show and the rerun of Michelle Obama’s latest appearance, a cup of good coffee and Duffy at her side.
In accordance with Patricia’s wishes, all funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, if you are able, please make a donation to:
