Ricky Lee Schmidt, 66, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at his home.

He was born September 16, 1958 in St Joseph, MI, the son of Dean Carl Schmidt and Gloria Jean (Krause) Schmidt.

Ricky grew up in Sawyer, MI, where he attended Lutheran school until 7th grade, and moved with his family to La Porte in 1972. He attended 8th grade at St. John's Lutheran in La Porte and graduated from La Porte High School, class of 1976. Ricky worked for Lewis Bakery until his retirement in 2025. He attended the 1st Church of God, La Porte. In his younger years, Ricky ran track and cross country for La Porte High, played softball for various teams, and helped crew a friend's sailboat for many summers. He loved working on cars, which he considered his "toys", and recently installed a new engine in his jeep. He also enjoyed motorcycles, especially his Harley. Ricky played the guitar for fun and was an avid sports fan, always cheering for the Detroit Tigers and Lions and U of M football. He will be missed by all who knew him

He is survived by his father, Dean Carl Schmidt; brother, Stephen Dean (Sarah) Schmidt of Huntsville, AL; two sisters, Brenda Robbins of Ft. Wayne, IN, Cheryl (Ron) Wilson of South Bend, IN; aunt, Sharon (Richard) Barnes of La Porte, IN; 8 nieces and nephews and 14 cousins.

Ricky was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Jean Schmidt.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN. On Saturday, June 21, 2025, a visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by a memorial Celebration of Ricky's life at 2:00 p.m. will be held at the funeral home. Cremation has been selected.
