Robert J. Green

January 11, 1952 — January 8, 2026

La Porte

Robert J. Green, a proud Chicagoan, whose warmth, humor, and boundless generosity touched all who knew him, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 8, 2026, in LaPorte, Indiana, just days shy of his 74th birthday.

Born on January 11, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert lived a life rooted in service, family, and community. He proudly served as a member of the Illinois National Guard and devoted more than 30 years of his professional life as the Division Superintendent and Assistant Commissioner with the City of Chicago – Meter Section and a member of Journeymen Plumber’s Local 130, working with diligence and pride.

A true son of Chicago, Robert had a deep love for the city and its politics. For over three decades, he was an active member of the 11th Ward Democratic Party and served proudly as a Precinct Captain, never missing an opportunity to engage in conversation, debate, or camaraderie. He was also a longtime member of the MBA–Monday Night Basketball Association, where he enjoyed over 40 years of fellowship, competition, and friendship. His commitment to staying active and connected continued through his two-and-a-half years attending Bootcamp at the Michigan City YMCA.

Above all, Robert was a family man. His family describes him as loving, loyal, rambunctious, tenacious, vibrant, and comical—always positive, happy, kind, generous, and endlessly helpful. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome. He absolutely adored his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Papo,” and he was equally adored by his in-laws.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Cathy (Bonnan) Green; his son, Patrick A. Green (Liz); his daughter, Beth Ann Warmhold (Kevin); and his cherished grandchildren, Sophia, Connor, and Matthew Warmhold. He is also survived by his sisters, Kathleen Gyrion and Carol Miller (Bill), as well as many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Green and Rita (Guilfoyle) Green; his brother, James Green; and his sisters, Mary Rita O’Brien Puffer.

A visitation will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave, LaPorte, IN on Monday evening, January 12 from 5 PM until 8 PM.
