Russell Koenig, 73, of New Carlisle, Indiana, passed away Saturday January 1, 2022 at Northwest Health La Porte in La Porte, IN.
His wife Dawn Koenig passed away as well on January 1, 2022 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
He was born November 16, 1948 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Russell Koenig Sr. and Lucille (Da'Tena) Koenig.
She was born March 9, 1962 in Plainwell, Michigan, the daughter of John Cowels and Leah May (Brown) Cowels.
Russell was a member of the New Carlisle Community Church and an Army veteran which he was very proud of. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 297 in New Carlisle as well as the Chaplain for the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 297. He retired from H.J. Heinz Company in Holland. Russell loved all Michigan sports but was a devoted Detroit Tigers Baseball fan.
Dawn was a member of the New Carlisle Community Church and formerly from Holland, Michigan. She enjoyed crafting and attended Paladin School of Michigan City. She too, was an active member of the American Legion Post 83 La Porte and they both enjoyed spending time at Hudson Lake and she was a regular camper at Sharing Meadows.
They both were very active members of the Christ Memorial Church in Holland, MI. prior to moving to New Carlisle to moving to Chicago Trail Village in 2015. Both spent many hours doing volunteer work.
Russell is survived by his Sister-in-Law, Michelle F. (Jon) Beach of La Porte, IN; four sisters, Sally (Raymond) Yoder, Dianne (Gary) Warner, Delores (Richard) Degroff, Christine (Dwayne) Waynick; four brothers, Robert Koenig, Richard (Lavette) Koenig, Ronald (Karen) Koenig, Randy (Doris) Koenig;
Russell was preceded in death by his parents.
Dawn is survived by her sister Michelle F. (Jon) Beach.
Dawn was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Theresa Cowels and Denise Harris; and Baby brother John Cowels
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN. A life celebration will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Haverstock Funeral Home in Russell's name.
