Ruth Veldman

Ruth E. Veldman, 84, of La Porte, IN, died Monday July 25, 2011 at Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital. She was born September 26, 1926 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of Bert Lindeman and Nellie (Vandenberg) Lindeman. Ruth was a member of Presbyterian Church, American Assoc. University Women, AARP, Art Club, and LaPorte Music Club. She was a life-time member of the LaPorte Hospital Auxillary. She graduated from Western Michigan University with a BS Degree in elementary education. Ruth taught 1st grade and kindergarten in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kent County, St. Joseph, Michigan, Stevensville, Michigan as well as LaPorte Schools Systems. After twenty years of teaching, she retired. Ruth enjoyed eating at Christo's and Louie's. She was also an avid bridge player. On October 4, 1951, in Grand Rapids, MI, she married Martin Veldman who preceded in death August 27, 2003. She is survived by her 2 daughters - Jill (Gordon Luft) Veldman of Everett, WA; Charlynn Robbins of La Porte, IN; 2 grandchildren - Mark (Nancy) Borkowski of South Bend, IN, Tonya (Steve) Woolum of Michigan City, IN; 4-great-grandchildren - Kayla, Christian, Ashton Woolum; and Aleah Borkowski; 2 brothers - Donald Lindeman of MI, Richard Lindeman of TX. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind. A private family service will be held at a later date.
