Shirley Louise Slease, 96, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Monday, August 28, 2023 at VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, IN.


She was born October 9, 1926 in Gary, Indiana, the daughter of Allen Anderson and Louise (Rossow) Anderson-Bell.


On April 17, 1945, in Compton, CA, Shirley married Alva Slease, Jr., who preceded her in death in October of 2007. They lived in Winimac and Knox before settling in La Porte in 1992. Shirley worked at many jobs throughout her life, including running The Sleepy Hollow Motel in Gary with her husband. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 748. She was known to have some psychic abilities which others received through her card reading, premonitions and her spiritual connections. Shirley had a talent for sketching, loved reading books, and enjoyed going to the BlueChip Casino with friends.


Shirley is survived by her son, Randall Slease of Covert, MI; sister, Robin (Carl) Froman of Crown Pointe, IN; brother, Rex Bell; grandchildren, Diana Smoot, Alva Slease IV, Tana (Scott) Jackson, James Slease, Heather (Darin) Cleaveland, Dustin (Kelly) Slease, Shelia Maloney Kjersti Peterson and 15 great-grandchildren.


Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, Alva L. Slease III and Colin Slease; sister, Audrey Duzan; brother, Orville Anderson and granddaughter, Lana Sky Slease.


Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN. Shirley will be interred next to her husband, Alva, at Calvary Cemetery in Portage.
