Steven H. Ohime

Steven H. Ohime, age 80, of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away on Thursday morning, September 17, 2026, at Northwest Hospital in LaPorte.

Steven was born on July 13, 1946, in LaPorte, Indiana, to the late Harry and Evelyn (Barbknecht) Ohime. A lifelong member of the LaPorte community, he graduated from LaPorte High School in 1965.

In 1966, Steven answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. His time as a Marine was a source of tremendous pride throughout his life. Steven was a proud veteran and patriot who held a deep and enduring love for his country and remained proud of his service in the Corps. He continued that connection through his membership in the Marine Corps League in Michigan City. For many years, Steven also proudly helped deliver toys through the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, bringing joy to children and families throughout the community. It was a tradition that reflected both his pride in being a Marine and the kind and generous heart he carried throughout his life.

On April 3, 1971, Steven married the love of his life, Jo Clark. Together, Steven and Jo built a beautiful life centered around love, family, laughter, and more than 55 years of treasured memories.

Steven was a hardworking and dedicated man who spent more than 38 years at the NIPSCO Generating Station. He retired in 2002 as a Station Mechanic after a long and fulfilling career.

Above all else, Steven was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family was the greatest source of pride in his life, and there was little he enjoyed more than talking about those he loved. He was immensely proud of his three daughters and especially treasured his role as a grandfather. His family always knew how deeply they were loved.

An avid outdoorsman, Steven loved fishing and duck hunting. Some of his happiest days were spent with friends, a fishing pole in hand and a good story ready to be told. He especially enjoyed fishing on Pine Lake, creating countless memories over the years with those who shared his love of the outdoors.

Steven was also a devoted sports fan who faithfully cheered for the Chicago Bears, Notre Dame Fighting Irish football, and the Chicago Cubs. A history buff with a curious mind, he enjoyed learning about the past and sharing what he knew with others.

Those who knew Steven will undoubtedly remember his wonderful sense of humor. A natural jokester and storyteller, he could make people laugh and was rarely without a story to share. Behind that big personality and quick wit was an exceptionally kind heart. Steven was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need and never hesitated to help others. His generosity, humor, and genuine concern for people made him a treasured friend to many.

Steven leaves behind a lifetime of memories filled with laughter, stories, fishing trips, family gatherings, and unwavering love. His greatest legacy will be found in the family he adored, the friendships he nurtured, his service to his country and community, and the many lives made a little brighter by his kindness and humor. He will be deeply missed, but the stories he told, the laughter he inspired, and the love he gave so freely will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.

Steven is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Jo Ohime; three daughters, Jackie Ohime, Jennifer Bailey (Adam), and Stephanie Ohime; three grandchildren, Steven Bailey, Isabelle Bailey, and Charity Bailey; brother-in-laws and a sister-in-law; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Funeral services for Steven will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services in LaPorte. Friends may visit Steven's family on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m.

Burial will immediately follow at Pinhook Methodist Church Cemetery in LaPorte, where Steven will be laid to rest with military honors, in recognition of his proud and honorable service to his country as a United States Marine.

Steven’s life was one of devotion - to his family, his country, his friends, and his community. A proud Marine, a loving husband, father and grandfather, a loyal friend, and a man with a wonderfully big sense of humor, he leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, laughter, and love. Whether he was helping others through Toys for Tots, sharing a story that was sure to bring a smile, spending a day fishing with friends, or simply enjoying time surrounded by the family he treasured so deeply, Steven embraced the things that mattered most to him. His stories will continue to be told, his laughter will be remembered, and the love and pride he had for his family will remain a lasting part of all those fortunate enough to have known him.
