Martin Albert Dempsey West, 81, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday December 18, 2020 at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso, IN.

He was born June 26, 1939 in Coalfield, Tennessee, the son of James and Altie (Carter) West.

A resident of the area since 1965, Martin worked for the U.S. Postal service for 28 years until his retirement in 1939.  He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam war from 1962 to 1964. Martin loved his garden, where he grew fruits and vegetables. Often times he set up a table at the end of his lawn for people to help themselves to the extra vegetables. Martin is survived by his wife Emma Lee West of La Porte; a son, Martin Keith (Gwen) West of TX; daughter, Elaine Kuta of La Porte, IN; three grandchildren, Bailey (Joel) Bonds, Danica West, Samantha West; two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Declan and his cats, Marty and Badger.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 13 brothers and sisters, Jesse, S.A., Arthur, Bill, James, Hobart, Herman Ray, Jeanette Cross, Flora Ella Kaler and 4 that died in infancy.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN. 46350.  The family has selected cremation.
