A homemaker, Melisa was a lifelong resident of the area. On September 23, 2000, she married Scott Brian Byrd in Rolling Prairie. Together they built a life and a family they loved.  Melisa was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 400 in Fish Lake.  She was an outdoor girl who enjoyed the simple things in life, like kayaking and bonfires. She loved going for short rides just to look at the scenery or longer rides out of state with friends for the pleasure of being with them.  Melisa was very close to her father through her life and she passed away on his birthday, October 12.

She is survived by her husband, Scott; son, Scottie Byrd, Jr.; daughter, Hope Byrd; two brothers, James Hicks of Knox, IN and Ryan Chapman of La Porte, IN; two sisters, Valory Hicks of North Carolina and Kathy (Don) Harradon of Knox, IN; sister-in-law, Janice (Chris) DeLee of La Porte, IN; father-in-law, Larry (Prudence) Byrd of La Porte and a large extended family.

Melisa was preceded in death by her parents; her mother-in-law, Patricia Byrd; best friend, Jodi Fairchild; uncle, Raymond Alexander; nephew, William Jones and step-brother, Matthew Bair.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2021.  A life celebration will follow at the funeral home, with Bob Vale, officiating.  Friends and family are invited to the Fish Lake American Legion after the service for dinner and sharing stories.
